When you look at window wells, they often appear to be roughly the same size and shape. It’s no surprise, then, that one of the most common responses we hear when asking customers what size of cover they need is: “Just a standard size.”

The truth is—there’s no such thing as a universal standard window well cover size when it comes to window well covers.

Why There’s No One-Size-Fits-All

While there are a handful of common sizes, the reality is that there are dozens of variations. In fact, there are around 50 common shapes and sizes of window wells, all depending on the manufacturer, model, and design. Different builders use different suppliers, which means the dimensions can vary widely even within the same neighborhood.

Another factor is installation itself. When builders backfill dirt around newly installed window wells, the metal or plastic can become slightly warped or misshapen. This means that even if your well started out as a “standard” size, it may not look or measure that way anymore.

How to Measure Your Window Well

Because of these variations, the best way to know what cover size you need is to measure your well directly:

  1. Measure the width and depth of the window well.

  2. Add 2"–3" to the width measurement when selecting a cover. This overlap ensures a good fit and creates proper coverage around the perimeter.

  3. Check the shape of your well against the cover you’re considering.

Shape Matters Too

Just as important as size is shape. For example, here at Feldhawk Outdoors, most of our window well covers are designed for D-shaped or half-circle wells. If your window well is a perfect rectangle, our covers may not be the right fit.

That’s why we always recommend closely comparing your well’s shape to the images and specifications of the cover you’re ordering. Getting this step right will save you time, hassle, and returns.

The Bottom Line

While window wells may look similar at first glance, there’s no single “standard size.” Between the variety of manufacturers, designs, and the way wells can shift during installation, accurate measuring is the only way to ensure a perfect fit.

By taking a few minutes to measure your window well and confirm the shape, you’ll be able to confidently select a cover that not only fits but also protects your basement windows for years to come.
